When I set a Master’s thesis topic in 1975 to answer the profound question about the relationship in human consciousness between the written word and mental images, I assumed the answer lay in psychology and that I would be synthesizing the three metalanguages of literary criticism, of art criticism, and of psychology. I set aside that labor to marry, but those questions pursued me. Thirty years later, I would discover the answers lay in human neurology and a novel paradigm I would discover while healing one of our children from schizophrenia. The reader will see that my work is scientific, scholarly, and replicable and that it meshes seamlessly with the scientific discoveries of other researchers. My discoveries and my opinions based on them are highlighted in red type. In the summaries near the end of this book, those discoveries are numbered in red [1 … 45]. I expect others to add their own remarkable insights as they work with these new understandings of how the human ear controls human thought processes and behavior.
